I remember back in the day when my parents had their old reel home movies converted to VHS tape. The process was long, involved, and expensive. The movies, mostly from 1950-blah-blah-blah, were in both black and white and color; but all were silent. The conversion company took all of the movies and set them to an appropriate musical audio track. I'm certain my parents still have the tape sitting around somewhere.

Today, it’s a little easier to take home video. Heck, even your cell phone likely has a still as well as a video camera built into it. However, getting them to a viewable state from TV set to TV set isn't always as easy as it might sound. We're still reliant upon set top players to get access to home movies, until WinX DVD Author.

WinX DVD Author converts nearly every known video format, allowing you to record and use video from just about any source available to you. After you've imported your video, you can use DVD Author's audio and video effect engine to support 16:9 as well as 4:3 video with Dolby Digital AC-3 audio. 

Once you have your video formatted to your liking, you can use DVD Author to create chapters, chapter menus, and even subtitles. Once your project is completed, you can use DVD Author to burn it to a DVD for playing on a set-top box. DVD burning is fast, taking less than an hour to burn a 4GB DVD.

Cons: QuickTime movie format is not supported

Conclusion: If you want to save your memories in a format that's viewable by just about everyone, WinX DVD Author is an easy way to get there. The program is free, works with common, Windows compatible, video formats, and is easy to use.
